Saltwater Bathing

There must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.
— Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

I tend to agree with Sylvia, bathing is relaxing and uplifting and it helps even at times when my world seems upside down. Adding high quality sea salts infused with organic essential oils to the bathwater makes the wellbeing experience even more transformative.

But why is bathing in salt so good for us? Well for starters, salt is naturally detoxifying, preserving, cleansing, healing and when used in bathing, both the salt and water help to relax our whole being - mind, body and spirit. Regular salt baths are believed to help flush out toxins and research also indicates that salt baths improve skin tone and texture. So whether it’s to have a more restful nights sleep, smoother skin or ease aches and pains, a high quality salt bath can provide your body with amazing positive benefits.

Historically, doctors would advise patients to visit the seaside to improve various ailments. Using seawater for medical purposes even has a name, thalassotherapy. Now scientists are quantifying the positive emotional and physical effects of water. It turns out that living by water leads to an improved sense of health and well-being and contact with water induces a meditative state that makes us happier, healthier, calmer and more creative, so if you can’t get to the sea, a salt bath every now and then might be a welcome alternative.

Essence + Alchemy SOL and LUNA Bathing Salts are all about taking a little time for yourself. Hand blended with locally sourced and sustainable sea salts, they are scented with organic essential oils that synergistically work with the healing properties of the salt to provide a holistic wellbeing ritual. In ancient alchemy, the planetary system was limited to the 7 wandering stars visible to the naked eye.

Taking the earth’s beautiful sun (sol) and moon (luna), Essence + Alchemy Bathing Salts have been crafted to honour their planetary namesakes. Read on to find out more.

To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of year, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.

Luna Bathing Salts.

LUNA sea salt is sourced from France where it is harvested from clay lined ponds during the ebb and flow of the lunar tides. The ionising action of the clay, combined with the artisan's skilful methods passed down through generations, enhances the salts unique array of trace elements. Infused with the aromatic properties of organic black spruce, fir balsam, black pepper and vetiver essential oils Luna creates a relaxing soak to help de-stress body and mind.

In greek mythology the Spruce tree was dedicated to Artemis, the Goddess of the moon.
